Overview

In the era of social media, people tend to care more about their physical appearance and body attractiveness than ever before. We keep registering for gym memberships and fitness classes to maintain our health and body shape each year. While, around 80 percent of Americans who have a gym membership do not use the gym.

And here is the problem: How many people can actually stick to their fitness plan actively?

Only 10%

Research shows that, in the year 2019, 95% of New Year's Resolution are fitness related and after just 3 months, only 10% of people think their resolution will last.

Research

Survey

After reviewing some secondary research, we start conducting surveys to gather brief information regarding user's workout/ fitness preference. Questions were including: workout locations, whether or not have companions, interaction with mobile devices, instructions and assistance and so on.

167 surveys were received in total.

Learnings

People preferred workout locations are evenly distributed on gym and home. Among the people who usually workout at gym, over 70% of people choose it for wide select fitness equipment.

Most people will bring mobile devices (smartphones, wearable devices) to workout with them, but only 27% of them would keep using fitness app.

Among the people who use fitness app during workout time: 51% use it to review training material; 41% use it to help tracking fitness data; 25% use it to enforce fitness habits.

Reasons people quit using fitness apps are: complex to operate, do not need assistants, too many advertisements, less accurate records.

Possible Solutions

In the brainstorming stage, we were using affinity diagram to collaborate possible solution ideas and gather each of the solution into categories, such as:

  • Provide professional workout instructions
  • Help user to build personal fitness profile
  • Create workout to-do list and presets
  • Social functions including matching new beginner with advanced user, find nearby workout buddies, motive user by competition and challenges, etc.

Interviews

To evaluate our possible solutions and gathering further in-depth insights from user, we conducted the first round user interview from 15 people. We labeled the interviewers by their fitness level:

Beginner

  • Hard to begin because lack of workout knowledge; Easily quit and get bored when workout alone; Low commitment.
  • Don’t have any specific workout plan; Barely able to get help from experts.
  • Would like to try personal trainer but not willing to pay for it (because of low commitment).
  • Bring friends to workout together would create positive mindset.

Intermediate

  • Have workout plans but hard to implement.
  • Would like to have a personal trainer who can create workout schedule and control the pace.
  • Need instructions on operating different gym equipments and demonstration of training on each muscle group.

Advanced

  • Look forward self-breakthrough over existing workout accomplishment (may through others workout inspiration).
  • Try to challenge his/her physiological limit.
  • Recommend for beginners, concern about trainer’s expertise and authority when choosing one.
  • Would like to meet new friends with people working on the similar body parts.

Key Findings

"Beginners are more likely to quit on fitness routines"

Beginners are more likely to give up and quit on fitness routines because they usually expect to get rewards immediately after each fitness session.

For someone who plan to lose weight through workout, it’s hard to see dramatic physical results after an 1-hour session. In psychology, study shows our natural human inclination towards instant gratification. Which in this case, if beginners not get any instant gratification after each workout, they would easily get discouraged or just give up.

"Intermediates require for more professional assistants"

Intermediate users are people step into the field for a while, and require for more professional assistants over workout equipment, training on particular muscle groups, and more reliable workout schedule and pace.

A more specific and realistic workout plan from experts would bring them efficiency and effectiveness to current stage.

"Advanced users have plans and enjoy communication"

Advanced users are fitness enthusiasts who are highly motivated toward their fitness goals. The group of users are clearly understand their main strengths and weaknesses. They tend to have structural plans and proactively working on exploit and improve their weaknesses.

For that reason, the advanced users enjoy communicating with people in different levels to gain extra knowledge and inspiration from them. They also love offering help as well.
